"Samuel was ministering before the LORD, a boy wearing a linen ephod. His mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year." 1 SAMUEL 2: 18-19 (NRSV)***********"MOM, SHOULD I TAKE THIS ROBE?" My about-to-be-a-teenager daughter is holding out her pink fleece robe as we pack for sleepaway camp. It comforts me to imagine her snuggled in the soft robe during a cold night when she is far from home. I want to wrap my arms around her and say, "Every time you feel like you need me, put on this robe, and I'll be hugging you tight! But I know she would shrug me off. These days she wants a hug from me only sometimes and on her terms.*****This tug between letting our children go off to live their lives and pulling them in tight to hold on to them is as old as the human heart. My Old Testament hero, Hannah, lived that tension in such a poignant way. God granted her the child she so desperately wanted, and then she granted that same child, Samuel, to service to God.***As we finish packing the trunk I realize I'm the one who needs a hug. Silently I ask Jesus to wrap me in His love so that I can send my child off with grace. ****In the Scripture above, we learn that each year Hannah would weave Samuel a robe and bring it to him during her annual visit to the temple. The Bible doesn't give us the details, but we know them, don't we? We can imagine her choosing the colors with such care, planning the size of the robe to allow for his growth over the course of that year, and weaving her love into every thread. Each night as she fell asleep, she knew her child, far away, was wrapped in that weave of her love. Dear Lord, I offer you this prayer, to help me with my current relationship situation. Please take away all the pain and hurt in my heart. Fill it with love, joy, patience, and understanding. Bless me and my partner, so that we may never surrender to whatever challenges that come our way. Fill our hearts with love for each other, and may you make each one of us realize each other’s worth. Please touch the heart of my partner and fill it with much love for me. Make our complicated relationship become uncomplicated. I seek for your mercy and blessing that you may allow us to spend the rest of our lives with each other. Please make this feeling mutual for both of us. Lead us not into temptations, especially during times of stress, feelings of being overwhelmed, and in situations/places that may lend to these temptations. Make us both seek and maintain exclusivity with each other in this relationship in our thoughts and actions and be honest at all costs. Let us look to each other for support and love. Guide us wherever we go. Always put us in each other’s heart and mind. Allow us to have spontaneity and romantic thoughts/ gestures towards one another. Make us unselfish in our thoughts and gestures towards one another. May there be truth and honesty between us even in difficult situations. May we verbally express our love for each other and our true intentions towards growing as a couple. Protect him from getting any viruses, other health issues, and colds during this time. Dear Lord please watch over my family. Provide them protection from those whom wish to do them harm. Provide peace of mind and guidance for my daughter in her pursuit to college. Protect and guide me at my jobs., and assist me with obtaining and maintaining financial growth and stability. Let truthfulness, justice, and the moral compass of others prevail for me and my family. Continue to provide protection, safety, health, happiness, love, and piece of mind to my family and me. Provide me the opportunity to grow my finances for the sake of my daughter’s education and towards my independence. Make her become more independent, grow cognitively, and prepare her to handle college and what life throws her way. Heal me from what ails me right now and get my body back to its healthy, skinny state. Help D.J.s body and soul heal that he may find peace with himself and his family, and help him grow his finances. Let there be authenticity, respect for me, truthfulness, sense of being valued, and genuine love in my relationship as that is what I am seeking and in need of at this time in my life. Help him have genuine show of appreciation for me, and be completely transparent and honest. Protect D.J. ,all my friends, family, and me from getting any colds and viruses. Heal those with the virus, protect those who come in contact with the virus, especially our healthcare workers, law enforcement, grocery/store and delivery workers, those with compromised immune systems, elderly, those with underlying health conditions, and military. Bring peace and justice to our country. Thank you for all of the blessings that you have bestowed upon us as we are forever grateful. In Jesus name I pray. Amen
