July 11, 2010 - Does Lindsay Lohan Need To Find Humility?

by Father Edward L. Beck, C.P.

So Lindsay Lohan got the book thrown at her. 90 days of jail time and then 90 days of more rehab. But do you really think any of this will help the train wreck that has become Ms. Lohan’s life? A woman who was clueless enough to have F. U. painted on her middle finger as she sat before the judge deciding her fate. Now why even bother even talking about any of this? Because maybe there’s an important lesson for us. It’s obvious that Lindsay Lohan thinks her celebrity status makes her exempt from the rules that the rest of us need to abide by. An attitude betraying the height of hubris and delusional self-importance. And that’s the heart of the matter I think. Addiction programs are built on an implicit spirituality that says there is a power higher than us. That’s why the first step is to admit ones powerlessness. We are not the center of the universe. It’s God’s universe and we are relatively insignificant players. The Buddha says we are the fingers that must point at the moon. But we want to be the whole moon. Lindsay thinks she’s the whole moon. And until she realizes she’s not, she’ll continue to traipse through life acting like she’s above it all. I don’t care how many Bibles she carries around. She needs to start opening them. Maybe begin with Proverbs Chapter 11: With pride comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
