May 09, 2010 - Coming Out to God

by Father Edward L. Beck, C.P.

Chely

I went to my first ever surprise coming out party this week. It was for a woman who had put a gun in her mouth ready to kill herself because she's gay. And now she's being celebrated as a brave Country Music singer who’s putting her career on the line by telling her truth. Chely Wright, who had the number one hit Single White Female and was named one of People Magazines 50 most beautiful people said that she had one prayer that she'd repeat three times a day for years. "Please God. Just take it away. Please God, don’t let me be gay." Growing up in a strict Christian household in Kansas, everything about her life told her that she was a sinner. She lived in fear of being discovered. Fear that her career as a country singer would be over if her colleagues and fans knew her secret. So she lived a life in the shadows, in a darkness that one day found her with that gun in her mouth. But the woman who walked into her surprise party the other night had obviously come a long way. Beautiful, confident and no longer afraid. She said that there are gay kids out there being told they are in spiritual jeopardy, that they are broken. And that she's here to tell them that they're exactly as God wants them. It's taken her 39 years to be able to say that. 39 years to get beyond a God whom she thought was disappointed in her. To embracing a God she knows loves her just as she is. She now says that her real sin was lying her whole life. Somehow missing the sentence in the Bible that said the truth shall set you free. With a new book, a new album, and a new truth to tell, Chely Wright is finally setting things right.
