Father Melvin A. Shorter, C.P.
Father Melvin A. Shorter, C.P. is the first of two children born to the late Melvin and Edith Shorter in Baltimore, Maryland. He was educated in the public schools of Baltimore, graduating from Baltimore City College (High School). He graduated from Coppin State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Upon graduation, Fr. Shorter worked for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore in the Division of Personnel as an Assistant Director of the An Employee Assistance Program—The Agency's Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Program.
In 1981, Fr. Shorter entered the Passionist Community taking temporary vows in August 1982, at which time he entered Catholic Theological Union pursuing a Masters of Divinity Degree. He graduated from Catholic Theological Union in 1986 with the M. Div. with a specialty in Word and Worship.
In June of 1986, Fr. Shorter took Perpetual Vows as a member of the Passionist Community and was ordained to the Priesthood.
Since his ordination, Fr. Shorter has served as Pastor of St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Atlanta, Georgia. He also has served on the Provincial Council of the Eastern Province of the Passionist Community. In 1996, Fr. Shorter served as one of five Catholic Chaplins to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.
Currently Fr. Shorter does Itinerated Preaching giving Parish Missions, Retreats to Clergy and Laity. Parish Revivals, and Days and Evenings of Recollections. He also assists the Passionist Communication's staff in serving as Presider to it's televised "The Sunday Mass."
